Poverty is a human rights violation.

Every person has the right to a standard of living that gives dignity, where the rights to health, food, clothing, housing, livelihood, and social services are adequately accessed, as provided for in international human rights treaties and declarations.

The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is observed every October 17 to “to promote awareness of the need to eradicate poverty and destitution in all countries, particularly in developing countries.”

This year, the focus is on Ending the Violence of Extreme Poverty: Promoting Empowerment and Building Peace.
